Dangerously Fast…Food
by Gillian Brassil and Jiya Nair
Your hand brushes against the oversized door. As you stroll in, a heat wave whops you in the face. Bright, fluorescent lights beat down on your increasing aches for the comfort that only a double cheeseburger can smother. Your heart starts to pound as you stare at the list of scrumptious sesame seed buns and perfectly cut pickles. What could possibly beat this? What food could top this? These are all questions that briefly flash through people’s minds as they answer the infamous question, “Do you want to super size that?”
As we walk down the halls at school, sit down in class, and chat with our friends, one topic has been increasingly showing up in conversations. That is none other than the issue of fast food. The name itself explains it: food that is made fast for the convenience of a busy lifestyle. Yet, it lacks the nutrients found in foods that take more time to make, like home cooked meals. Food is something that you intake to get energized, but when you eat fast food, you are eating food that is missing quality. Many say it tastes good and while that may be the case (since it is a business bringing in megabucks), it is because of all the chemical preservatives, not the actual food. The underlying food is virtually tasteless, yet the chemicals that give it taste are extremely harmful to your health in the long run. It seems like eating fast food all the time results in very little reward for such a big risk.
