Interview with Student Council Guru, Ms. Grassia

by Debra McIlhargey and Clara Washburn

Q. How do you like running student council?

A. I love it!!!!!!

Q. What do you do at student council meetings?

A. We eat, give thanks to students who recently worked on things, and we talk about calendars, ideas for fundraisers, and activities that promote school spirit and fun.

Q. How do you get the ideas for your fundraisers?

A. What we did at the beginning of the year was to have an 8th grade meeting and to think of activities for the whole school year.

Q. What has been your most successful fundraiser?

A. I think the Valentine’s Day lollipops. That was when students could purchase as many lollipops as they wanted for $1 each and have them delivered to a friend anonymously or signed with their name. We sold out of 1500 lollipops, which means we made $1500 that went right back into the Student Council activities fund.

Q. What has student council planned in the past?

A. Dress-up days, a karaoke night, dances, and the exciting teacher vs. student volleyball game, which benefited the Pennies for Peace fund.

Q. What does student council have planned for the future?

A. More dress-up days, an all-grade end of the year dance, and possibly a fashion show next year.

Q. How do you become a member of student council?

A. Meetings are always open to any students who would like to express their ideas, but most of the students who are in student council have won the election to be their homeroom’s representative.

Q. When does the election take place and what do the candidates have to do?

A. It happens at the beginning of each school year. Students who are interested prepare a small speech about why they would make a great representative. The homeroom votes and the winners not only get to represent their homeroom in student council, they get to run for executive board if they choose.

Q. What is executive board?

A. A group of four students who run the student council meetings. They made a speech in front of the whole school in the auditorium at the beginning of the year. Then all the students from each grade voted on their top candidate.

Q. How many kids are in student council?

A. Well each homeroom has at least 1 representative. So there are about 45 kids in student council and about 30 at each meeting.

Q. Who have been your most valuable members from each grade?

A. That’s a tough question because I don’t want to single anyone out. They are all great!

Q. How has student council changed from the beginning of the year?

A. I think that students have experience now so they are more independent and are single-handedly putting events together.

Q. What is the best part of student council?

A. I think it’s seeing students be leaders, getting to take responsibility and plan special events, and have opportunities to create something they’re proud of. It is especially nice to see students have fun at events in school.

Q. Would you want to continue running student council for years to come?

A. Of course! That would be an honor!
