Team Pride Short Story Night - A Students Account

by Beitrice Choo

My dad parked the car in the parking lot and asked me if I was ready to present. I looked at him and replied, “Uh, yeah.” I thought about it and then confidently nodded my head. “Yep, I totally got this!” And I was sure about myself too. My father and I stepped out the car and I ran into Gillian. She was carrying an icebox, which I assumed was refreshments for short story night. We smiled at each other and walked into the school together. As we headed our way into the library, I went over my presentation in my mind and kept telling myself, “I can do this”. I stepped into the library and looked for Jiya, and when I say her, I went over to say, “Hi”. We chatted and looked at everybody’s brochures. They were really fantastic! By that time, tons of students and adults were gathered and the place became quite crowded. I tripped towards the projection section. Pictures of the school year were being projected and many 7th graders were gazing at the screen and laughing at funny pictures of themselves. Only when the teachers separated us did we get down to the nitty-gritty of presenting.

The grouping in which I was to present was gathered in the library. That’s when, one by one, the MC of the group would call out the name of a presenter in a pre-arranged order. I was first. The first presenter had to really warm up the crowd and get them excited to hear all of the stories. When I first got up there with everyone looking just at me, a butterfly fluttered to the top of my stomach. Soon though, I got caught up in the moment and read steadily. The time passed by quickly and I had a lot of fun. I especially enjoyed getting to listen to the short stories of my other group members. It turned out that everyone on Team Pride that presented their short stories were great authors. We all owe a lot of thanks to all of our fantastic teachers this year. Thanks especially to Ms. Gagnon for running the short story night and to Ms. Grassia for making us all enthusiastic about learning more about the European countries. Thanks a ton!
